Windsor Place--Dryer Fire

Sunday, February 24, 2013 9:59pm Hockessin Fire Company along with Millcreek, Cranston Heights and Elsmere Fire Companies were dispatched to the Windsor Place Assisted Living facility at 6677 Lancaster Pike in Hockessin for a High Life Hazard Structure Fire. As units responded, it was reported by NCC Fireboard that the fire was located in the laundry room. Upon arrival, it was determined that a dryer unit was on fire which created a light smoke condition in the building. Crews worked on extinguishing the dryer fire while others assisted the facility staff in relocating the elderly residents outside due to the smoke condition. Positive pressure ventilation was utilized to clear the building. HFC Chief Quint Saienni declared the incident under control at 10:35pm and residents were allowed back into the building.

Lancaster Pike MVC with fuel spill

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 2200

At 2200 hours Tuesday, January 15, HFC was dispatched for an MVC on Lancaster Pike in front of the Wawa.  Units arrived on scene to find a collision between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer (explaining the noise heard by several HFC members as far away as Hickory Hill). Assessment of the scene revealed a sizable diesel fuel spill from a ruptured fuel tank on the tractor-trailer; hazmat units from DNREC and Belvedere Fire Co. were summoned by Fire Chief Quint Saienni. Assistant Chief Randy Broadwater and Probationary Firefighter Mike Hudack promptly began diking adjacent storm drains to minimize the flow of fuel towards Mill Creek.   Lancaster Pike was closed between Yorklyn Road and Valley Road for approximately three hours while firefighters, hazmat personnel and others worked on hazard mitigation and removal.

Responding agencies:

Hockessin: B19, R19, Fire Police.
Avondale: A23-1
Belvedere: HAZMAT 30
DNREC: HMRU 3, HMRU 5, additional personnel.

DVFA Fire Prevention Award

Sunday, January 6, 2013  On January 6, 2012, the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association held the annual Fire Prevention DVFA Poster and Essay Luncheon at Hartly Volunteer Fire Company.  This program is created to educate and encourage children from K through 8th grade to be aware of fire safety and to spread the word to others.   It was once again a well attended event where family members as well as teachers and administration showed up to support the students fire prevention program.

Christopher Albert, son of Active HFC Member Nicholas Albert, entered the contest and his poster landed him a first place win!  Christopher is a second grade student from Saint John Beloved and attended the event with his parents and brothers.

This is a wonderful community event that teaches children about fire safety but also how our community volunteers are such an important part of his life and education.  Christopher is already looking forward to next year’s event!

Back to Back MVC's with Extrication

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Heavy rain and winds the evening of December 26 possibly contributed to 2 separate motor vehicle accidents where patients needed to be extricated from the vehicle.  The first incident was dispatched at 6:14pm as an MVC w/ Rollover at Lancaster Pike & McGovern Road in Hockessin.  Hockessin Fire Police closed Lancaster Pike at Valley Road while Rescue 19’s crew worked on the extrication.  Avondale (PA) Fire Company Station 23 personnel sent an ambulance to the scene and also assisted with traffic control.  Engine 19-3 responded during clean-up of the scene to wash down debris that was left in the roadway.

While finishing up at Lancaster Pike, Station 19 was alerted to another MVC on North Star Road in the area of Beech Hill.  Upon arrival of B-19, it was discovered that a tree had fallen on a vehicle and the occupant was trapped.  Crews from Engine 19-5 worked to remove the tree and also removed the roof of the vehicle in order to perform the extrication.  Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder responded to assist with Engine 9-3 and Hockessin’s Engine 19-3 also responded.  Fire Police stood by at the scene due to downed power lines in the roadway.
