Assist Kennett on a working house fire

Sunday, December 25, 2011 23:26 At 2326 hours on Christmas Day units from Hockessin were dispatched to
assist Chester County Station 24 (Kennett) on a "working" fire on
Indian Springs Road just off Bayard Road.  Tanker 19 responded shortly
thereafter with 5 personnel under the command of Assistant Chief 198A
(Antoine).  Rescue 19 responded as the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team)
with 7 personnel under the command of 198 (Perrone).

An orange glow was visible in the night sky as both units proceeded up
Bayard Road.  Upon arrival a heavy volume of fire was venting from a
large two-story dwelling.  The fire had been reported to the occupants
by a neighbor, all escaped safely.  Due to the lack of hydrants on
Indian Springs Road Tanker 19 was placed into a water supply shuttle.
Numerous other tankers from across Chester County soon joined in.
Tanker 19's remaining 4 personnel were detailed to fire suppression
operations.  Rescue 19's crew assembled the requisite tools and
medical equipment for RIT operations and all 7 personnel deployed to
the front of the fire building

Due to the large volume of fire interior operations were temporarily
suspended while the ladder pipe from Chester County Ladder 25
(Longwood) darkened down the fire.  Once the bulk of the fire had been
knocked down interior firefighting resumed.  A crew from Chester
County Rescue 36 (Po-Mar-Lin) replaced Rescue 19's crew as the RIT.
Rescue 19's crew was reassigned to suppression.  Hockessin personnel
spent the hours following engaged in firefighting and extensive
overhaul and salvage of the fire building and its contents.  Hockessin
firefighters were in service for over four hours at this incident.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by Chester County Fire
Marshals 101 and 102.

Tanker 19 personnel: Notarnicola (driver), Antoine (officer), Saienni,
DelSignore, Farley.
Rescue 19 personnel: Broadwater (driver), Perrone (officer), Gropp,
Florian, Yang, Peirson III, Treml.

Assist Claymont on working building fire

Monday, December 19, 2011  On Monday afternoon 12/19/2011 the New Castle County Fire Board began
receiving numerous calls for a townhouse fire on West Boxborough Drive
in the Ballymeade development off Naamans Road.  Claymont and
neighboring fire companies from New Castle County and Delaware County
(PA) were dispatched at 1429 hours.  At 1434 the first engine from
Claymont arrived with one townhouse fully involved and fire spreading
to adjoining townhouses.  A second alarm was transmitted at 1437.  A
major structural collapse occurred at 1448 with a firefighter
declaring a "Mayday" subsequent to the collapse.  A third alarm was
transmitted and the incident commander spent the next few minutes
verifying all on-scene firefighters were accounted for.  Thankfully
this was the case.

In addition to numerous companies committed to the fire, other
companies were being dispatched to cover depleted fire stations in
northern New Castle County.  Tower 19 was requested at 1509 to cover
Claymont's station along with Engine 165 (Elsmere) and Rescue-Pumper
216 (Mill Creek).  Tower 19 and a crew of six under the command of
Deputy 19 (Broadwater) was soon in Claymont along with 165, 216, and
Deputy 12 (Perillo).

A call for a motor vehicle crash on Darley Road was handled by 216,
then at 1759 the incident commander at Ballymeade requested 165 and
Tower 19 to the fire scene to relieve personnel from the initial
arriving companies.  Upon arrival, Tower 19 was backed into West
Boxborough Drive and positioned for aerial operations.  Tower 19's
crew spent the next 2.5 hours assisting with overhaul and wetdown of
the original fire building and exposures, clearing the scene at 2044.

Tower 19 crew: Roat (driver), Broadwater (officer), Saienni,
DelSignore, Gerard, Scholl Jr.

Chihuahua Rescue on the 12th Green

Friday, October 28, 2011 14:40

On October 28, 2011 at 2:40pm the Hockessin Fire Company was dispatched to assist Mill Creek’s Deputy 21 with a dog stuck in a hole on the 12th Green. Rescue 19 and Brush Unit 19-0 arrived at the old Pike Creek Golf Course and were advised that a small dog was trapped in a deep, washed out hole down on the 12th green of the course. Using the Humvee Brush Unit to get down to the green which was about a half mile off of Fairmount Drive crews found a small Chihuahua down an hole about 7-10 feet deep which had formed after recent rain storms. Crew attempted to reach the dog and pull it to safety, however being cold, scared and not knowing the rescuers who was trying to save him, began to pull farther back in the hole. The SPCA was then called for the use of a pole snare. Once SPCA Captain Brian Whipple arrived he used the pole snare and was able to get ahold of the Chihuahua and pull him to safety. Once pulled from the cold, wet hole, Past Chief Drew Outten wrapped the Chihuahua in his fire jacket and carried him to the SPCA unit and was taken back to the SPCA to be evaluated.
